Poem: Eye See

Round
Soft
Small
Cuddles
Adore Able

Hazel eyes
White tuft
Nude
Wears pearls

Serious for one so small
She carries the weight of the world, they said
I absorbed the belief
Before I understood
Responsibility for you and everyone else
My duty

Taught the guilt
It tamed me
You never had to say a word
I was regulated by your training

Taller
Pixi cut
Clothed
Yellow umbrella

Hazel eyes
Deep pools
Spill over
Water falls
Cheek bones
Grief flows

Singing the blues
Down the garden path

Look after her
I absorbed the belief
My role
Little mother
Before my brain developed
Before I could think it through

Fabricated
This false identity
Constructed
Never had to say a word
Regulated by your training

Eight
Good girl
Daddy’s girl
Trying not to be a girl
Never mummy’s girl

Hazel eyes
Hide heartache
Abusive things stuffed deep inside
Fragmented
Facaded

Groomed
Sexualised
Man’s pleasure
Never asked
Regulated
Trained

Older
Shaved head
Sheer clothes
Raging

Hazel eyes
Hide scars inside
Do her smiles reach her eyes

Covered over
Sensitivity
Relentless positivity
Fake now
Heart guarded
Build up
Stored pain
Since life started

Who is this girl
A woman now
Femininity squeezed on down
Man’s world
Competitive
Seeks to find sedatives

Grownup
Long locks
Covered up
Seeking

Hazel eyes
See herself
Warts and all
Sadness swells
Given up
Surrenders

Feminine
Emotions flow
Truth is found
Changing
Be’s herself
Is herself
Open hearted
Humbled

Hazel eyes
Now see lies
Veil lifted
Clouds skud by

Clarity
View has changed
Finally
Reality
